What is Malifaux?

Malifaux is a skirmish game set in an alternate Earth during the 1900s. Two players fight to gain control over towns, settlements and places of power in a dangerous new world. To get started, you will have to build a crew, beginning with a Faction that most appeals to you. You can find more information about all of the factions and masters on the Wyrd-Games website here. Fun fact: Malifaux has one of the best mobile apps for keeping track of your game, and it’s completely free!

When you play a game of Malifaux, each player hires a crew. Your crew can only be made up of models that come from the same faction, unless you choose a “dual-faction” master. Once you’ve chosen a faction, you’ll choose a master for that particular game. Masters come with keywords attached which further limit which models are best hired in your crew. For example, the Ten Thunders faction has a master named “Misaki Katanaka” who has the keyword: Last Blossom.

Masters will often define how your crew plays, so it’s important to pick a master you like. When picking a faction and a master to start with, it’s best to go with the rule of cool: pick whatever excites you the most! From mercenary Outcasts that make their own rules, and Resurrectionists that like to raise the undead, to the Ten Thunders underground crime organization or the nightmare-ish Neverborn monsters, Malifaux has you covered!

One of the unique aspects of Malifaux is that it uses a standard deck of cards instead of dice to determine the success or failure of actions, as well as the amount of damage they do. This means there’s less randomness and you can plan ahead by keeping track of how many high or low cards you’ve drawn. A pretty unique mechanic that still allows for some big plays and fun randomness, but also a little more control.
